The Russian River Wine Road is home to many world-class wines. There are several appellations all within an easy drive from Fern Grove Cottages including Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. The variety of wines is diverse in style and gold medal winners abound. The Russian River appellation produces outstanding Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine. Dry Creek and Alexander Valley produces great Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. The Russian River appellation produces more methode champenoise than anywhere else in the state.

Many pleasant days can be spent visiting the tasting rooms and wineries. Some have picnic areas, spectacular gardens and some feature local art works. The scenery along the way is gorgeous.

The town of Guerneville offers many unique shopping experiences from antiques to eclectic art collections. Also you can select clothing for a casual weekend or equipment for an outdoor adventure. Within easy driving distance, you can also explore the many stores of Healdsburg, Duncans Mills and Sebastopol.
ARMSTRONG REDWOODS STATE RESERVE
At the end of Armstrong Woods Road at the second traffic signal off River Road (Hwy 116) you will find the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve. The park has 805 acres of natural beauty, featuring a awe-inspiring grove of ancient redwoods. The park also offers self-guided trails, picnic areas and a large amphitheater.
Some of California's tallest and oldest redwoods grow in Armstrong: the Parson Jones Tree is over 310 feet high and the Colonel Armstrong Tree is more than 1,400 years old.

CANOEING & KAYAKING
From Fern Grove Cottages, it is an enjoyable stroll to the river; taking less than ten minutes to reach and enjoy the beautiful Russian River as it flows past Wine Country vineyards and redwood covered hillsides. Spend a leisurely day canoeing down the river towards Guerneville. Stop and sunbathe along the many sandy beaches. Experience spectacular sightings of ospreys, blue herons and egrets. Canoe rental makes it easy. All the equipment is available and a courtesy shuttle returns you to your car. Please note that some canoeing and kayaking companies may operate on a seasonal basis.
